You may remember that BBC’s popular Beechgrove Garden series selected Knockando Woolmill as one of three community garden spaces they helped redesign back in 2013 with the Mill featuring on the series that September.
Presenters George and Jim worked on a design that was sensitive to the history of the mill and made provision for the dye plant garden, vegetable plots and beehives, inspired by the Woolmill’s crofting past. Many local volunteers helped with the preparation, working on the groundwork and drystone walling as well as during the filming process itself, turfing, sowing, raking, planting and potting.
To commemorate the restoration of our Mill garden, we also designed a special tartan based on the McColl sett after the programme’s presenter Jim McColl. It incorporates purple, white and the greens from the Beechgrove Garden logo.
So after all this support and great work, it really is with much dismay to learn that the broadcast powers that be are proposing to postpone this much loved gardening and conservation institution that’s been entertaining viewers and supporting great causes for around 40 years.
Our friends at Beechgrove Garden are petitioning to return this much loved institution to its rightful place on BBC 2 and we are on board with them.
We would urge our Mill friends and supporters to help with their petition in recognition of the wonderful support they showed the Mill and transformation of our garden.
